Sylvia and her dog

In general, Petey has pretty much ignored or tolerated Sylvia since she came home. This is beginning to change, however. Recently, Petey has shown much more interest in Sylvia. I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact that she's much more aware now and acknowledges him. It started with Sylvia just smiling at Petey every once in a while when he would walk near her. Then Petey started sniffing her while she's on her play mat. Saturday I noticed that he's taken to licking her in the face. She doesn't mind. In fact, and this is kinda gross, I think she likes it. He was licking her face and I saw her stick out her tongue, I'm pretty sure Petey licked her mouth. In fact, I know he did, I was laughing when I told him to stop. It was funny and pretty disgusting at the same time. He also likes to lick her ears. I try not to scold him harshly for doing things like that because I don't want him to think that he'll get in trouble for going near her.

Sunday I put Sylvia next to Blake in bed for a minute and Petey jumped up next to them. It was one of the cutest things we've seen, probably because it involved both the dog and baby being cute. Petey put his face kind of close to Sylvia. She reached out and put her hand on his nose and just left it there. It didn't last too long, a few seconds probably, but I really wish the camera would have been on hand. I hope this is a good sign that Petey will feel a bond with Sylvia and not just see her as a threat, stealing all the of the attention he used to get.

I took this picture on Saturday. I'm not sure if he likes to hang out next to her because he likes her or he knows the closer he is to Sylvia, the more attention he'll get. Either way, he's a pretty smart dog.

Excited for Christmas! (and Thanksgiving)

So this will be Sylvia's first holiday season, and I am SUPER excited about it. So much of our family hasn't gotten to see her in a long time. I can't wait to see her smile and laugh at all of them. With one side of the family, she'll be one of many kids. At another side, she's going to be the first baby in a really long time. My cousin Jason and his wife, Amber, are going to get to see her for the first time at Christmas! Our niece, Kaleigh, will get to see her for the first time at Thanksgiving! It's going to be a lot of fun. I've already been busy picking out outfits for Christmas (and neither was over $15!). The one to the right is her outfit for Christmas Eve. I usually wear some kind of hat to Dad's side, I thought it would be cute to pass that on to Sylvia.

Here is the outfit I've picked out for Christmas Day with  the Pauls family. I love them both! Hopefully she can wear both of them for a while before pooping on them :) Maybe I'll need to get a couple extras.

This will also be our first Christmas morning together as a family. We're still debating about what we'll do once we have kids old enough to know about Santa. I would really like to be able to have a Christmas morning thing at our house but with Christmas Eve with my family and Christmas Day with Blake's, it doesn't make a lot of sense to drive back to Cedar Rapids. Suggestions?

What's new with Sylvia

Sometimes I write about such random things that I feel like I forget to keep people updated with the day to day with Sylvia. Well, she's awesome. The end. Just kidding, there's a little more. Here's a list because lists are cool.

  1. She's a rolling machine. She will roll to her stomach just about every time we put her down. She loves the play mat that my Grandma Kaufman got her, but recently she loves to roll over and look around. I'm not sure how often it happens, but the other day I saw her roll to her stomach and then roll back onto her back. I think this was kind of an accident, she was looking really far to one side and the massive weight of her head kind of tipped her back over :) She was surprised but not upset.
  2. She's laughing. Every once in a while Blake or I (or anyone else, I guess) will do something that Sylvia thinks is hilarious. She's finally getting a handle on laughing out loud. Before it was a lot of wide grins with no sound. She especially loves when I hold her above my head and bring her down to my face really slowly. Sound effects are involved, of course.
  3. She's either 13.11 pounds or 13 lbs 11 oz. There's a difference, but since I had to miss her last doctor's appointment Blake couldn't tell me the answer. Our doctor called in sick and I don't have any time off, so I had to miss the rescheduled appointment. I felt super guilty since she was getting shots, but luckily she has a loving daddy who was there to comfort her. In all honesty, it might have even been better that I wasn't there.
  4. She must have long legs like her daddy. She's been wearing 3-6 month clothing for quite some time, and they all fit except for one thing. Her legs are too long. It's most noticeable in her sleepers. I've actually had to retire some of her 3-6 month sleepers and break out some 6-9 month ones just because she needs more length. I believe she was in the 50th percentile for weight and the 75th percentile for length the last time she went to the doctor. So she's not huge, but she's a fairly tall girl. I don't think she looks too skinny though, she's still got her little leg rolls :)
  5. She will sleep for about 12 hours if I let her. Normally I have to wake her up in the mornings before work, but on the weekends she will sleep from about 8:30 until 7:30 in the morning. There was one night that she slept for 13 hours! It was crazy. I woke up in a panic when I realized I had slept past 8:00 am.
  6. She's all smiles when she wakes up. She hasn't cried in her crib in quite a while. Every morning I wake up to her talking. Sometimes it's 3:00 in the morning, but giving her a pacifier will almost always put her right back to sleep. Then when she wakes up later, I consider it waking up for real, she smiles and laughs when I go in to tell her good morning.
Ok, here's a picture :) We went on a walk the other day and I took a picture to send to Grandma Gilmore and Daddy.

My mom got her that Winne the Pooh rattle. She loves it! Mostly she tries to eat it, but I think they're kind of BFFs now. And there's Petey in the background. He's super annoying to take while I'm walking with Sylvia, but I feel too guilty not to.

Cutest ever

Blake took this picture of Sylvia on Halloween. I just love it. I can't stop looking at it. I even printed it and hung a big copy of it at work.

Let me see your Tootsie Roll!

First of all, thanks to Erica for giving me the idea for the title of this post :)

Last night was Halloween, like I need to tell anyone, and Sylvia dressed up for the occasion... for a little less than half an hour. We didn't go anywhere becasue we had trick or treaters and Blake wasn't in the mood to go anywhere. It was a typical Sunday except for all the kids in costume expecting free candy.

Anyway, Sylvia was adorable. Here is her costume.

She was a good sport while Blake was taking pictures. Here's another of my favorites.

I feel like she's thinking she doesn't really know what's going on, but it's fairly amusing to her. She already thinks we're dorks. Oh well, we're loving dorks.

Also, these pictures were taken on our new camera. I like it, I think. It's a Canon, and I realized yesterday that the last one I had is also a Canon. It followed me all through college, so you know it had to be good. Hopefully, a better camera means more pictures for all of you!
